About the International Reflux Day

International Reflux Day falls on the 9th of November each year, a day dedicated to those who suffer from reflux problems. Reflux is not something that is often talked about but it frequently has a huge impact on people’s lives.

What is International Reflux Day?

International Reflux Day is a global initiative founded by MYoroface AB. The aim of the day is to raise awareness and break the silence around reflux.

Reflux is a global problem that is estimated to affect at least 20 percent of the population in the western world. The symptoms not only affect the individual’s own quality of life, but can also have serious socio-economic consequences.

Many people suffer from their symptoms in silence. They sometimes don’t even realise what their symptoms are, and can find it difficult to find a treatment that actually helps.

We want to change that by using this day to talk about reflux with both experts and all of you who are affected.

What is reflux?

Acid reflux means that you have a return flow of stomach acid from the stomach up into the oesophagus. When the corrosive stomach acid comes into contact with the oesophagus and mucous membranes, it causes a number of unpleasant symptoms which can be experienced differently from person to person.

Reflux is caused by a weakening of the diaphragm, a muscle that holds the stomach and its contents in place.

A hiatal hernia causes stomach acid to leak uncontrollably into the oesophagus.

The most common symptoms are:

  • Feeling of a lump in your throat
  • Heartburn
  • Acid regurgitation
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Dry cough
  • Thick and bubbly saliva
  • Pain in the upper part of the abdomen
